Fractional Head of Accounting & Controller — Medical Device | Remote | Contract

Role Description This is a contract-based remote role for a Fractional Head of Accounting & Controller specializing in the medical device industry. The role involves overseeing financial statements, managing financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. Additionally, the position requires developing financial strategies, analyzing financial data, and contributing to strategic business decisions. This role has no direct reports, this is a startup atmosphere and this role will be required for all the AP and AR required including closing month end and other tax liability reporting. What You'll Own

  • Configure COGS and chart of accounts in QuickBooks for FDA-regulated commercial manufacturing
  • Reconcile inventory across three active locations
  • Build QuickBooks integrations and automate key workflows
  • Establish month-end close procedures from scratch
  • Configure and validate Avalara sales tax for multi-state compliance
  • Build financial reporting structure appropriate for a scaling medical device business

Must-Haves — Non-Negotiable

  • Commercial accounting background in medical device, regulated manufacturing, or similar — R&D accounting experience is not a fit for this role
  • Hands-on Avalara experience (configuration and ongoing management, not just awareness)
  • QuickBooks expert: you've configured

, integrated , and automated QB — not just used it for data entry

  • Built accounting systems and procedures from scratch at a small or early-stage company
  • Can operate independently without extensive oversight

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in preparing, analyzing, and managing Financial Statements and Financial Reporting
  • Strong Analytical Skills with experience in Finance-related decisions and strategy
  • Expertise in accounting principles and practices for commercial manufacturing (not R&D)
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent certification preferred
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with GoFlow, Extensiv WMS, or comparable fulfillment/WMS platforms
  • Shopify ↔ QuickBooks integration experience
  • Prior fractional controller or multi-client practice experience
  • Direct medical device / FDA regulatory familiarity

What Success Looks Like at 90 Days

  • COGS structure correctly configured and running in QuickBooks
  • Inventory reconciled with 6-12 month forecast cost structures
  • GoFlow/QB/Extensiv data flows automated or formally scoped
  • First clean month-end close completed with documented procedure
