Role Description Brown and Caldwell (BC) is seeking an experienced Health and Safety (H&S) Professional to join our Enterprise H&S team. In this role, you will report directly to the Enterprise Director of Health and Safety. The H&S Business Partner performs multifaceted occupational health and workplace safety tasks and provides support for successful project delivery related to identifying, evaluating, eliminating and mitigating workplace hazards to prevent incidents. This includes support in the development, maintenance, and continual improvement of enterprise wide policies/programs, processes, systems and tools related to ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, client requirements, and standards within the organization. Work is performed independently under limited supervision with occasional guidance on complex or strategic issues. The ideal candidate is an articulate communicator—both verbally and in writing—who brings strong organizational skills, technical aptitude, and a proactive mindset while balancing multiple priorities in a dynamic setting. Success in this role requires a collaborative approach, adaptability to shifting project demands, and the ability to develop systems and tools that align closely with the way people work. The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening our safety culture, stewarding systems and processes, and driving continuous improvement in H&S performance across the enterprise. Remote work within the United States is allowed; the ideal candidate will be located near a BC office for occasional in-person collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Provide coaching and support to functional areas, project teams, and/or employees on health and safety policies, procedures, and other guidance.
  • Conduct routine inspections, audits, and/or work observations to assist in identifying potential hazards in the workplace environment.
  • Support the development of and/or administrative review of project-specific Health and Safety Plans, including conducting technical reviews for low to medium risk projects.
  • Maintain, monitor, and support aspects of local office health and safety, including related policies and procedures.
  • Support regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal health and safety standards, including OSHA and MSHA standards.
  • Participate in the facilitation of company H&S Training program including leading development and implementation of employee training.
  • Respond to incidents promptly, coordinating the necessary response and leading investigations.
  • Provide guidance on health and safety management practices during field projects.
  • Contribute to maintaining occupational health and workplace safety procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain health and safety policies and procedures in accordance with governing standards and regulations.
  • Support management of company personal protective equipment (PPE) and other similar programs.
  • Provide basic ergonomic support and guidance to affected team members when needed.
  • Flexibility to adapt and execute various additional assignments based on evolving needs.

Mentorship

  • May provide mentorship, guidance, support and knowledge-sharing to help less experienced team members develop their skills and grow in their roles.

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to complete complex assignments independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective relationship building and fostering collaboration.
  • Strong communication and decision-making skills, with demonstrated ability to provide guidance within organizational policies.
  • Solid understanding of health and safety regulations and standards.
  • Strong understanding of common hazards and minimum controls associated with water supply and wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Strong ability to review and interpret regulatory and/or company policies for implementation.
  • Strong knowledge in hazard assessment and control principles.
  • Strong understanding of company incident management program.
  • Demonstrates a strong aptitude for quickly mastering new software applications.
  • Capable of managing and maintaining H&S systems with strong skills in adapting to new technology.
  • Skilled in MS Office products including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Experience

  • Typically, a minimum of 5 years of experience in a health and safety role within a similar work environment.
  • Experience with developing and/or facilitating occupational health and workplace safety standards for active projects.
  • Experience with supporting incident management and corrective/preventative action development.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in H&S operations in the construction, engineering services, wastewater treatment, or environmental remediation industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in digital H&S management platforms and tools.
  • Development of eLearning or microlearning H&S training content.
  • EHS management system implementation and assurance (e.g., ISO 45001).
  • Application of serious injury and fatality (SIF) prevention principles and practices.

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Health and Safety or in a similar field is required.
  • Relevant Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) certification or ability to obtain is required.
  • Additional health and safety certifications or specialized training may be required.

Preferred Education

  • Master’s Degree in Health and Safety or in a similar field.

Salary Range

  • Location A: $85,000 - $116,000
  • Location B: $94,000 - $128,000
  • Location C: $102,000 - $140,000
